The season one finale of Fox‘s Lethal Weapon aired tonight, so you might be wondering if the show is going to live on for a second season. The answer is yes, the show has been renewed for season two. The second season will likely air in Fall 2017.

At first, the writing looked like it was on the wall early for the show, as Fox only put in a “back five” order instead of a full “back nine.” This meant that the first season would only run 18 episodes, as Deadline noted. Despite the short back-order, the series was renewed for a second season in February.

Through February, the show averaged a 1.4 live rating in the 18-49 adults demographic. Fox said that the show averages 11 million viewers over multiple platforms, making it among the Top 5 of new shows for the 2016-2017 TV season.

Lethal Weapon is based on the hit action movie franchise created by Shane Black, who does not work on the series. Matt Miller developed the show, which stars Damon Wayans as Roger Murtaugh, the role Danny Glover played in the movies. The Mel Gibson role is played by Clayne Crawford. Other members of the main cast include Jordana Brewster, Kevin Rahm and Keesha Sharp.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Miller said they will continue adding more references to the movies, but do not strictly adhere to them. Miller explained:

I’m not interested in using those movies as this immovable bible that we have to adhere to, but rather that we got the tone of the two guys. We were able to cast two guys in Clayne and Damon, who are terrific, and hopefully their chemistry sort of makes you forget about the movies a little bit, and just forge our own paths so we don’t feel beholden to anything in the movies. That said, we introduced Leo Getz because he was a beloved character from the movies and it was really fun for us.

Lethal Weapon is produced by Warner Bros. TV, which also makes Lucifer and Gotham for Fox. While Lucifer has already been renewed, Gotham hasn’t been picked up for a fourth season yet.
