Patience Jonathan, the uncommon, unusual and busybody wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan should explain to Nigerians already facing the harsh economic recession how she came about owning a property worth N10 billion as a civil servant who did not hold any political office, the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, (CACOL), said in a statement to TheSimonAtebaNews.
According to The Financial Times, a United Kingdom-based newspaper, the hotel, Aridolf Resort Wellness and Spa, which was launched towards the end of Mr. Jonathan’s tenure, belongs to Nigeria’s former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan. The resort, said to have imported state-of-the-art furniture, ranks with other luxury hotels in the world.
Mr. Jonathan was defeated by President Muhammadu Buhari last year after Nigerian chose to break away from a system they described as full of corruption and waste.
Nigeria is going through its worst financial crisis in decades with a weak naira, low oil prices, high unemployment numbers and many indebted states unable to pay salaries. With the hardship, many have been expressing anger at waste and money acquired illegally by politicians who are not used to being held accountable and steal oil money with impunity.
President Buhari, who has vowed to rid the country of corruption, has repeatedly said he will force those who stole Nigeria’s wealth to return it.
Billions have already been recovered from public thieves, according to the presidency, although no name has been made public.
“How did she get the money,” thundered the coalition’s chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran.
“As far as we can understand, she didn’t hold any government position, she’s just a civil servant, so as a civil servant how did she manage to acquire such a luxurious property that is worth that amount, because she would have earned less than 10% the amount even if she has been a Director or Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa civil service all of the entire years she has spent on earth,” he added.
Mr. Adeniran called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to begin the prosecution of the former first lady “who has by her action in court confessed she possesses an amount of cash and property she couldn’t have legitimately earned”,
“We commend so far the efforts of the Federal Government and the anti-corruption agencies for their efforts in probing those Publicly Exposed Persons found wanting. We also call on the government to exhibit pro-activeness towards creating the enabling environment for the fight against corruption by facilitating the emergence of enabling laws that will remove encumbrances on the path of the anti-corruption drive.”
