Sergio Garcia found the elusive green jacket by winning the 2017 Masters. Garcia won the tournament on the birthday of his idol Seve Ballesteros. He was able to get the victory by finishing one stroke better than Justin Rose on the first playoff hole.
The final day of the Masters started with a group of golfers at the top but ended with a playoff battle between Rose and Garcia. Rose and Garcia forced a playoff with both golfers finishing four days of golf at -9. Both golfers hit stellar second shots on the 18th hole but were unable to gain ground on the final hole as each finished with four strokes.
Rose and Garcia entered the final hole tied for the lead at -9. Both Rose and Garcia were going for their first Masters victory. Not only was it Garcia’s first Masters but his first major of any sort. Rose’s only major heading into the Masters came at the 2013 U.S. Open.
Charl Schwartzel finished -6 and shot -4 on the final day which placed him in third for the tournament. Belgian Thomas Pieters and American Matt Kuchar made a valiant comeback by shooting -5 in the tournament.
Two American golfers, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, were expected to challenge for a green jacket but fell out of contention as the day progressed. Both golfers finished tied for 11th at -1. Fowler shot +4 while Spieth shot +3 on the final day.
