Energy experts, business leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders have urged the Bayelsa State Government to provide legislative protection for major electricity infrastructure and expand the state’s 60-megawatt gas power facility to support broader economic development.
The call was made at a South-South Re-Awakening Group roundtable held as part of activities marking Bayelsa State’s 30th anniversary.
Convener Joseph Ambakederimo said reliable electricity was fundamental to industrialization and argued that the state should use the existing gas turbine as the foundation of a 24-hour power economy.
He said Bayelsa needed a long-term strategy linking generation, transmission, distribution and commercial investment.
Chairman of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, King Bubaraye Dakolo, said dependable power could stimulate business growth and help reduce social problems by creating economic opportunities.
Bayelsa Electricity Company Managing Director Olice Kemenanabo said generation alone would not guarantee stable supply without adequate transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Director-General of the Bayelsa Electricity Regulatory Agency Rosalyn Dressman said the state was working to improve coordination among generators, distributors and consumers and extend supply to more communities.
She identified transformer vandalism as one of the weaknesses in the electricity value chain.
A communiqué from the roundtable called for policy consistency, legislative backing for energy assets, stronger anti-vandalism enforcement and expansion of the 60MW system.
Stakeholders said the objective should be to turn the state’s power investments into a durable platform for industrial growth, business development and wider household access to electricity.
