Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein
National Geographic‘s highly anticipated Albert Einstein series Genius finally debuts on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 9 p.m. ET. The 10-episode first season follows Einstein in multiple periods of his life. It has already been renewed for a second season, which will focus on a different “genius.”
The first season of Genius is based on Walter Isaacson’s biography Einstein, His Life and Universe. Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush plays Einstein in his later years, while Johnny Flynn plays the younger Einstein. The one character trait that will link the younger and older Einstein is his philandering ways. “He as a philanderer extraordinaire,” actress Emily Watson, who plays Einstein’s second wife told TV Guide. Einstein was married twice, first to Mileva Marić from 1903 to 1919, then to Elsa Einstein from 1919 until her death in 1936.
Rush is an Oscar-winning actor for his role in 1996’s Shine, in which he played pianist David Helfgott. He earned more Oscar nominations for his roles in Shakespeare in Love, Quills and The King’s Speech. However, the Australian actor is best known around the world for playing Captain Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. He just finished work on the fifth film, which opens on May 26.
