Briga Heelan as Katie
NBC‘s last new sitcom of the 2016-2017 TV season is Great News, which debuts on Tuesday, April 25 at 9 p.m. ET. The show is executive produced 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, who also worked together on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It was created by Tracy Wigfield, who won an Emmy for co-writing the 30 Rock episode “Last Lunch” with Fey.
The series stars Briga Heelan as Katie, an ambitious millennial who is a producer for the cable news show The Breakdown. She already has to juggle the egos of anchors Chuck (John Michael Higgins) and Portia (Nicole Richie) when she is horrified to learn that her mother, Carol (Andrea Martin) just got an internship at the show! Katie is 30 years old and hoped that she no longer had to deal with her mom every day, but that’s not the case now.
In an interview with MovieFone, Heelan said her relationship with her real life mother is much like her fictional one. “It’s like beautifully dysfunctional,” Heelan explained. “My mom and I have always been very close, best friends, kind of obsessed with each other. Then I think I just really have, my whole life, put my mom on such a pedestal. I’ll continue to do that always. She’s this joyful, really insightful, incredible person. She’s just like a walking morale booster.”
