The Presidency through the Nigerian Police, has announced officially, that the reason it arrested and raided the Kano and Jigawa homes of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, was because he made inciting statements.
Post-Nigeria recalled, that Lamido before now, had declared his intention to contest for the 2019 Presidential election, under the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Kano State Police Spokesperson, Samba Sokoto, said the alleged statements made by Lamido, were capable of inciting violence, and argued that the supposed offence is contrary to Section 114 of the Penal code.
He further disclosed that the Police is still investigating the matter, and will charge the former Governor to court, as soon investigations are concluded.
The investigations according to the Deputy Superintendent of Police, followed a petition received on April 27, from the Jigawa State Government, against Lamido.
In the report, Lamido was said to have urged his supporters to recourse to violence, should the coming July 1 Local Government elections in the State, not favour them.
Part of the petition sent by Ikenna Ekpunobim, Counsel to incumbent Governor of Jigawa State, Abubakar Badaru, translated from Hausa reads: “Before the election, I will make everyone of you swear with his life to protect our cause. No matter what, I will not listen to you for complaining. All I want is to come for your bail in the Police station, breaking another person’s head, or you fought someone, because the administration belongs to mad people.”
Lamido was alleged to have made the above statement, at a PDP meeting, in Dutse, Jigawa State.
Following his arrest on Sunday, the former Governor’s houses in Kano and Jigawa, were reportedly searched by separate teams of Police Officers.
However, details of the result of the search were not yet available, as at the time of this report.
