The New York Times is reporting that a member of the US Navy Seals has been killed in Somalia, the first American combat fatality there since 1993 during the “Black Hawk Down” battle. Two other American soldiers have been injured.
Defense Department officials said the service member, who was not identified, was killed during an operation in which Americans advised and assisted Somali troops targeting a Shabab compound, the Times reported.
Pentagon helicopters delivered Somali forces to the operation near Barii, about 40 miles west of the capital, Mogadishu, officials said. American advisers hung back, per the rules of engagement, while the Somalis carried out the raid.
