Heath Ledger’s Death
Actor Heath Ledger died on January 22, 2008 in New York City. He was unmarried and had one child, a daughter with actress Michelle Williams. His cause of death was ultimately ruled as cardiac arrest brought on by prescription drug intoxication. CNN reported Ledger’s death as an “accidental overdose.” The New York City medical examiner’s office released the following statement in regards to the cause of death: Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine. We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications. In response to the death, Ledger’s father Kim and other family members gave the following public statement: While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath’s accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage. Families rarely experience the uplifting, warm and massive outpouring of grief and support as have we, from every corner of the planet. This has deeply and profoundly touched our hearts and lives. We are eternally grateful. It was reported that around 2:45 p.m. ET, Ledger was found dead in his bed by his housekeeper, Teresa Solomon, and his masseuse, Diana Wolozin. He died in his loft apartment at 421 Broome Street in the Soho area of New York City. Upon finding Ledger unconscious, Solomon reportedly phoned Ledger’s friend Mary-Kate Olsen for help. At 3:26 pm, “less than 15 minutes after she first saw him in bed and only a few moments after the first call to Ms. Olsen”, Wolozin telephoned 9-1-1 “to say that Mr. Ledger was not breathing”. Wolozin attempted CPR, but the results were not successful.
