Mr. Attah Ochinke, the immediate past Attorney General and
Commissioner for Justice of Cross River State shared his thoughts
on the current adoption of candidates by the EBF in relation to
some agitation within the Akwa/Cross zone.
He made his position known at the monthly meeting of the
NBA-Young Lawyers’ Forum (YLF) Calabar Branch, which held on
Friday, the 23rd day of February, 2018.
At the meeting, the former HAG encouraged young lawyers to focus
on capacity building and prepare themselves to face the competition
the globalization of the world and legal profession presents.
Speaking on the EBF adoption, Mr. Ochinke said “Adoption is not
new in the EBF, it is a fine tradition of EBF and has helped
the EBF remain about the most formidable NBA Forum”. He encouraged
the young lawyers to respect the decision of the EBF and do
everything to ensure that the EBF stays united as the Forum is
better united than separated.
On the agitations of Akwa/Cross, he took the young lawyers down
memory lane, informing them that in 2012, the EBF zoned the
presidency to the South South block of the EBF and that was the
right time for the Akwa/Cross to agitate, but no member of
Akwa/Cross came out to run. He said then in 2012, elders from
Akwa/Cross approached Mr. Usoro, SAN to run, but he declined and
Paul Erokoro, SAN who later entered the race, backed out at some
point. He said the current agitations would have been in order if
the presidency is zoned to the south-south region this time. To
him, if the candidates accept and embrace zoning at the national
level of the NBA, then it is imperative they also accept zoning at
the various Forums of the NBA.
Finally, he advised the Akwa/Cross to shelve their agitations
for now and embrace the decision of the EBF and support the adopted
Candidates. He reminded young lawyers that in the grand scheme of
things, the EBF is more beneficial to the South-South minority of
the EBF than the South-East majority as whoever wants to contest
for any position in the NBA must of necessity need the support of
our Eastern brothers.
The Chairman of the YLF, Calabar branch, Mr. Enome Amatey, on
behalf of the Young Lawyers’, thanked Hon. Ochinke for the
encouragement and for always finding time to come talk to the young
lawyers. He thanked him for also clearing the air on the issue of
adoption, as the young lawyers are now more properly guided.
