A group of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have
besieged the residence of Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi
West located at No 11 Sangha Street Maitama Abuja which has been
under siege by the Nigeria Police.
The protesters, who defied armed policemen stationed at the
premises of the house arrived in their number chanting solidarity
songs in support of Dino and vowed not to leave until police vacate
the residence.
The protesters said that they will resist any attempt to arrest
the senator and sat on the floor in front of the house.
The entire street has been thrown into pandemonium as residents
were not allowed to have free movement into the street.
Though the protesters have not clashed with the police as at
time of this report . Effort to know the whereabouts of the senator
proved abortive as one of his lawyer, Ajayi Samuel Jaiye said that
has not been able to contact his client.
He said that the action of the police to invade and lay siege on
his house is a gross violation of his fundamental human rights.
He noted that the police have not invited him formally neither
there has been any warrant issued against him to warrant the
harrassment.
Addressing journalists the Chairman of Internally Displaced
Persons (IDPs), Kushigoro Camp, Philemon Emmanuel, said that
Senator Dino Melaye has been their only benefactor who come to
their camp once in a month to give them food, drugs and other
items.
“We heard that they have arrested Senator Dino Melaye because of
the truth he has been speaking. We have not seen any senator that
can speak the truth like Dino.
“So anything that will happen to him should happen to us. We
have more than 36 camps in Abuja and Nasarawa. Its only Dino Melaye
that can visit the IDPs. He gave us food items, drugs and books for
our children. We will not allow anything to touch him,” Emmanuel
vowed.
Dino was prevented from travelling to Morocco at the Nnamdi
Azikiwe International Airport by the security agents.
