London, November 17, 2018 – At its recently concluded Executive
Council meeting in London, United Kingdom, Vice President of the
Nigerian Branch of the International Law Association, Professor
Damilola S. Olawuyi has been elected as a Vice Chair of the
International Law Association.

The ILA was founded in Brussels in 1873. The ILA now has some
3,500 members in 45 national and regional branches around the
world. It is headquartered in London under the Chairmanship of the
Right Honourable The Lord Jonathan Mance, former deputy president
of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. ILA’s objective, under
its constitution, is to promote the ‘study, clarification and
development of international law’. ILA has consultative status with
a number of the United Nations specialized agencies. The Executive
Council of the ILA defines ILA’s mission and working program at the
international level.

Speaking in London after the election, the President of the
Nigerian Branch of the ILA, Professor Fidelis Oditah QC, SAN noted
“On behalf of the Nigerian Branch, I heartily congratulate
Professor Olawuyi for his well-deserved election as ILA Vice Chair.
His deep expertise in international law, as well as his national
involvement and recognition in this area, undoubtedly allow him to
offer invaluable perspectives to the work of the ILA. The Executive
Council of the ILA, as well as the Nigerian Branch, will benefit
immensely from the passion, dedication and skill that Professor
Olawuyi will bring to the role of Vice Chair.”

Professor Olawuyi has been serving as Vice President of the
Nigerian Branch since its establishment. He has served as a member
of various committees at the national level, and as member of the
global ILA Committee on Sustainable Natural Resources Management
representing Nigeria. A distinguished expert in energy and
environmental law, Professor Olawuyi has authored several
influential articles, books and reports on the role of
international law in extractive resource governance. He has
practiced and taught law in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa and
the Middle East. Earlier this year, he received the Herbert Smith
Freehills Visiting Professorship at the University of Cambridge,
United Kingdom.

Speaking on his election, Professor Olawuyi said “It is an
absolute privilege and honour to have been elected as Vice-Chair of
the International Law Association. For several decades, the ILA has
played pivotal roles in the development and understanding of public
and private international law. I thank members of the Executive
Council for their confidence in me and I very much look forward to
working with them to advance ILA’s important work of deepening
international rule of law across the world”

Membership of the ILA is open to anyone, including lawyers and
non-lawyers, interested in international law. The Nigerian Branch
of the ILA regularly hosts innovative lectures, seminars,
conferences, and other capacity development programs to advance the
