Former Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi
Azikiwe University and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof Ilochi
Okafor
The Nigerian Bar Association has identified illiterate
population and weak institutions as the bane of credible elections
in the country.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Ilochi Okafor, stated this
in a keynote address he delivered at the 2018 bar week of the Ogidi
(Anambra) chapter of the association.
While calling for greater transparency in the country’s
electoral processes ahead of next year’s general elections, Okafor
regretted that biased institutions were saddled with the conduct of
elections in the country.
He attributed the trouble with Nigerian elections to what he
called “biased electoral institutions” and prevalence of
“uninformed or illiterate voters.”
Okafor said, “For there to be free and fair elections, voters
must be educated. There must be credible institutions capable of
conducting free, fair and unbiased elections.”
