365 Days In Office Attorney General Of Ekiti, Olawale Fapohunda, Records Achievements

Olawale Fapohunda has successfully clocked 365 days in office as
the Honourable Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of
Ekiti State. Writing his name on the golden wall Olawale Fapohunda
has recorded tremendous achievements since his inception as AG.

The Honourable Attorney General, has championed the enactment of
various Laws and policies which includes:

 Ekiti State Magistrate Court Law 2013;
 Ekiti State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2014;
 Ekiti State Administration of Civil Justice Law 2019;
 Ekiti State Property Protection (Anti Land Grabbing) Law
2019;
 Gender-Based Violence Prohibition Law 2019;
 Ekiti State Fiscal Responsibility Law 2019;
 Ekiti State Board of Internal Revenue Law 2019;
 Ekiti State College of Education, Ikere Ekiti (amended) Law,
2019;
 Ekiti State College Of Health Sciences and Technology Law,
2019;
 Ekiti State Transition Law 2019; and
 Ekiti State Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Law 2019.

Other initiatives include:

 The Palace Court Judgements which is targeted at strengthening
traditional courts and ensuring access to justice for people in the
grassroots in Ekiti State;
 The establishment of the Legal Information Service, an online
platform which is committed to the professional development of the
Legal Profession in Ekiti State;
 The establishment of the Ministry of Justice Academy first of
it’s kind in Nigeria; which is created to facilitate the continuous
professional development of law officers and administrative staff
within the Ministry.

Under his administration three (3) new departments were created
which are for Monitoring and Evaluation, Corporate and Commercial
Law and merged the Department of Law Review and Legal Research and
Statistics into one department.

 MOJ Legal Advisory Programme to all MDAs; and
 Law Officers Security Protection Service.
 He also saw that backlog of monies owed Law officers are paid
 The construction of the new Ministry of Justice complex has
commenced under his watch.

The Okemesi Ekiti born Lawyer, Fapohunda, was appointed by the
Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi as the
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice on the 8th November
2018 in recognition of his numerous contributions to the justice
sector and development.

Before his appointment, he was the Managing Partner, Legal
Resources Consortium, Nigeria a public interest law firm. In that
capacity, he has provided leadership to major reform initiatives in
the Nigerian justice sector.

He obtained his First Degree from the University of Jos, Plateau
State and later, his Master of Laws Degree at the Kings’ College
University of London, with specialisation in International Human
Rights Laws. He has practiced Law for about Thirty years.

Fapohunda, is well known within his professional association –
the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), He has served Chairman,
Committee on the Administration of Justice. In that capacity, he
co-authored the NBA strategic policy document on practical steps
towards reform of the administration of justice in Nigeria. He
wrote the NBA Pro-Bono Declaration. He facilitated NBAs relations
with Foreign Bar Associations including the signing of MOU with the
Law Society of South Africa and the Netherlands Bar
Association.

He chaired the first African Bar Leaders Conference and
facilitated two Legal Services Trade Missions to The Netherlands
and South Africa respectively. The purpose of these missions was to
introduce Nigerian law firms to the legal markets in these
countries, to market Nigerian legal services to companies and
individuals, to raise awareness about the Nigerian legal and
business climate to companies interested in doing business in the
Nigerian market.

Justice sector reform expert, is a member of the International
Bar Association and the General Secretary of the West Africa Bar
Association. He has also been a resource person for the
Commonwealth Lawyers Association and the Pan African Lawyers
Union
