The Association Of Lawyers With Disabilities In Nigeria(ALDIN)
has written to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja Branch
demanding an accessible Bar centre for Lawyers with
disabilities.
This is contained in a letter written by the Association made
available to Nairalaw (TNL), which was signed by the
President of the Association, Mr. Daniel A. Onwe Esq. and Mr.
Bolarinwa Salami Esq., the Lagos State Chapter Chairman of the
Association.
“The above-named association wish to heartily commend and
congratulate you on the on-going construction work on the NBA,
Ikeja Bar Centre. May the Lord almighty grant you all the grace to
successfully complete the good work”. The letter stated.
Meanwhile, the Association drew the attention of the Branch to
the earlier promise it made to build a Bar centre that would be
accessible to them in view of their plight.
According to the letter:
“It would be recalled that at the monthly meeting of
October, 2019, our dear Chairman gave the assurance that the said
Bar Centre would be built to be accessible to persons with
disabilities. We are optimistic that, in keeping with the said
assurance, the Bar Centre, all the apartments therein and
appurtenances will be made accessible to persons with
disabilities.”
Furthermore, the Association drew the attention of the
Branch to the provisions of Sections 20(1) & 24(1) of Lagos State
Special People’s Law and Sections 3 & 4 of the Discrimination
against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Law, 2018 mandating
public institutions to provide special accessible facilities for
persons with disabilities.
In addition, the Association added that since there are
several Lawyers with disabilities in the Branch with paid dues, it
is expedient for them to be taken into consideration in building an
accessible Bar centre. According to the letter:
“It may interest you to know that there are a number of
members of the Ikeja Bar, who are persons with disabilities.
Nothing could be more unjust and discriminatory than such members
paying their dues and fulfiling other obligations to the bar, and
the same Bar turns around to build a Bar Centre that they cannot
access.”
Finally, the Association concluded that they are optimistic
that their request would be acceded to.
“We are confident that this Exco shall do what is just and
non-discriminatory in the circumstance. On our part, we shall be
glad to freely assist the Exco, whenever called upon, in achieving
this objective.” The letter concluded.
