The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has
promised to appeal the verdict of the appellant
court which overturned the deregistration of 22 political
parties.

Speaking on Monday 10th of  August, National Commissioner
and Chairman Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, in a
statement the electoral body in the country has agreed to approach
the Supreme Court over conflicting judgements by the Court of
Appeal on its powers to register political parties.

He also revealed that the verdict had some contradictory
statement as the judge reinstated the fact that the electoral body
can deregister any political  party but still went further to
nullify the deregistration of 22 political
parties.

The Commission is therefore faced with two conflicting
judgements from the Court of Appeal; one affirming the powers of
the Commission to deregister political parties and the other
setting aside the deregistration of ACD & 22 others.

INEC further said it is focused on preparations for the conduct
of the Edo and Ondo governorship elections scheduled to hold on
September 19 and October 10 respectively.

There are concerns the elections are being threatened as the 22
deregistered political parties were not included as those to
participate in the polls.
