The veteran defender could be signed on a free in January after
terminating his Watford contract.
Yesterday, Joe Gomez suffered a serious knee injury in
training with the England national team. Today, he underwent surgery to repair a torn patellar
tendon, and even in a best case scenario that likely means he will
miss most of the 2020-21 season.
Along with Virgil van Dijk’s season-ending ACL injury, it leaves
the Reds dangerously light at the back, and so an intensification
of transfer rumours linking the club with all manner of centre half
ahead of the January transfer
window seems inevitable.
On that front, TeamTalk today claim Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has recommended
national team teammate Daryl Janmaat to the club. The 31-year-old
defender is currently out of contract following his departure from
Watford over the summer.
Janmaat agreed a termination of his Watford contract on October
12th, after the close of the transfer window in England and other
major European leagues. He would not be eligible to be registered
with a new club until the January window opens.

If Janmaat were to sign with a new club before then, though, he
would at least be able to train with them in the meantime, and the
claim is that Liverpool are now seriously considering offering the
veteran Dutch defender a short-term deal.
It might not make for a splashy signing, but as a short-term
stop-gap solution that the club could bring in for six months it
could be appealing—though with the caveat that while he
can play centre half, Janmaat’s primary position is right
back.
