RE: UNPROVOKED AND UNWARRANTED ASSAULT ON THE
CHAIRMAN OF ONDO BRANCH OF THE NBA, MR. THOMPSON AKINYEMI BY A
POLICE OFFICER AT FUNBI FAGUN POLICE STATION
ONDO.

Colleagues,

Following the report of an unprovoked assault on the Chairman,
Ondo Branch of the NBA, Mr Thompson Akinyemi, by a police officer
to wit: the Divisional Police Officer (DCO) of Funbi Fagun
Divisional Police Headquarters, Ondo, Ondo State, the leadership of
the Bar in Ondo State led by the Forum of Branch Chairmen today
paid a unscheduled visit to the Commissioner of Police (CP) Ondo
State, Mr. Bolaji Salami, to submt a petition and make a verbal
report of the incident to him. The CP on being informed of what
transpired between Mr Akinyemi and the police officer concerned
apologised profusely on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force to Mr.
Akinyemi and the entire Bar. He assured that such incidence will
never be condoned by him and that the officer concerned will be
adequately sanctioned in accordance with Police Service
Regulations. He enjoined members of the Bar to promptly report to
his office any such infraction by any officer in the State Command.
The Bar appreciates the CP’s intervention and the professional and
very courteous manner he attended to leaders of the Bar who visited
his office. We were highly impressed by Mr. Salami’s professed
respect for members of the Bar and we urge him to keep it up.

We will follow up on the case with respect to the disciplinary
action against the officer by the police hierarchy.

We assure members of the Bar in Ondo State of maximum protection
from any form of police (or other security agencies) harrasement or
brutality.
