The long-running crisis between the Oyo State Government and sacked local government officials may finally be resolved following a reconciliation meeting facilitated by Minister of Power, Oloye Adebayo Adelabu.
Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, the former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) who was sacked by Governor Seyi Makinde in 2019, was part of the minister’s entourage during a working visit to the governor’s office on Monday.
A source privy to the closed-door meeting said Chief Adelabu appealed to both parties to embrace peace, after which Governor Makinde promised to immediately release funds owed to the sacked council officials.
“Today, peace has been brokered between the state government and sacked ALGON members as Governor Makinde promises to release the fund immediately,” the source stated.
There were light moments before the reconciliation talks as Governor Makinde exchanged banters with Prince Abass-Aleshinloye, joking that he had only come to remind him about the money owed.
The source added that after the meeting, the governor proceeded to shake hands with the former ALGON chairman, signaling an end to their long-drawn dispute.
The crisis began in 2019 when Governor Makinde dissolved elected local government executives shortly after assuming office.
