The U.S. Department of Defense has greenlighted a substantial $1 billion arms sale to help strengthen Nigeria’s military capabilities amid complex security threats.
The package includes 12 advanced AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters scheduled for delivery by June 2024. Additional mission computers, valued at $7.7 million, were already provided last December.
For years, Nigeria has battled insurgencies by Boko Haram militants and bandits that have killed thousands and displaced millions in the country. The new military assets aim to upgrade security infrastructure and support shared objectives.
The Viper helicopter deal follows U.S. approval in 2022 of Nigeria’s request for the armaments. The sale reinforces America’s policy goals in Africa and partnership with a key regional ally.
The versatile Viper chopper conducts vital reconnaissance, escort and strike operations during missions. It joins Nigeria’s expanding defense acquisitions like the M-346 attack jets, T-129 helicopters and Chinese Wing Loong II drones.
