Says “Those in Charge of Government in the North Stole Children’s Future”
Senior Advocate of Nigeria Jibrin Samuel Okutepa has launched a scathing attack on the country’s institutions, accusing them of losing their thinking faculties and acting only at the direction of the executive.
In a statement released today, Okutepa expressed his disbelief at the way those in charge of Nigeria’s systems operate, stating, “Nigeria is indeed a comedy of jokes. I do not really understand the ways of those in charge of the systems in Nigeria. It appears that virtually all those in charges of our institutions have lost their thinking faculties and only reason after they have acted wrongly to the prejudices and disadvantages of the victims and to the embarrassment of Nigerian nation.”
Okutepa’s comments come in the wake of the recent arrest and arraignment of minors by the police, who were kept in what he described as “the most dehumanising state.” Despite initial justifications by the police authorities and prosecutor, the children have now been released following public outcry, with the case brought forward to November 5, 2024.
The Senior Advocate criticized the police for their handling of the case, questioning the proofs of evidence that supported the charges framed against the minors. He also accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of engaging in sycophancy and eye service by setting in motion a process to investigate the circumstances that led to the misconduct.
Okutepa called on lawyers to be bold and courageous in their role as social engineers and urged those who misconducted themselves in this case to face the consequences of their actions. He emphasized that President of Nigeria cannot be everywhere and that those who act on behalf of the Nigerian state must be held accountable for their misconduct.
The Senior Advocate also highlighted the broader issues at play, arguing that the children are products of the wickedness of the state and that those in charge of government in the North who stole their future should be held accountable. He stressed that it is not enough to release the children back to the unhygienic conditions that led to their current state.
Okutepa’s comments paint a damning picture of Nigeria’s justice system and the lack of independence in the country’s institutions. His call for greater accountability and responsibility from those in power is likely to resonate with many Nigerians who have grown weary of the country’s comedy of jokes.
