On the evening of Tuesday, December 24, 2024, armed gunmen abducted Hon. Justice Azuka, the member representing Onitsha 1 North Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
The kidnapping occurred around 9:20 pm while Azuka was returning home on Ugwunaobankpa road in Onitsha’s Inland Town area.
According to eyewitness reports, the abductors double-crossed Azuka’s vehicle at gunpoint and swiftly whisked him away in an operation that lasted less than five minutes. Since the incident, the lawmaker’s whereabouts remain unknown, and the kidnappers have not made any contact with his family, friends, or associates.
Azuka, a chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), recently regained his mandate after the court sacked Hon. Douglas Egbuna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was initially declared the winner of the 2023 poll.
Residents of Onitsha have expressed shock and concern over the abduction, describing Azuka as a peaceful, approachable grassroots politician who maintains a close relationship with his constituents. They have appealed for his urgent and safe release.
Superintendent of Police Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that efforts are underway to rescue the abducted lawmaker and apprehend the kidnappers. “The Command is already working on some clues for possible rescue and arrest of the kidnappers. Further development shall be communicated,” Ikenga said.
