Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has granted pardon or commuted sentences for 53 convicts, including Segun Olowokere, a man convicted of stealing fowls, whose case attracted widespread attention after his mother’s emotional plea in a recent podcast.
The decision came on the recommendation of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. In a statement, Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson Olawale Rasheed announced that 30 inmates convicted of simple offenses had their sentences fully remitted:
OLUBO SUNDAY, ISAH UMAR BIODUN, FAWAS KAREEM, OMIRIN TEMITAYO, OLARENWAJU AYOMIDE, DARE SUNDAY, OLADAPO TUNDE, GANIYU SAHEED, ADEWUMI SODIQ, ADEBAYO ADEOYE KEHINDE, LASIS KAZEEM, DAUDA OJO (59 YEARS), ISMAILA RAJI, OSENI MICHEAL, AJAYI KOREDE, ABIONA NURUDEEN, OSHI SAMUEL, SHEU YUSUF OLATUNJI, OJO AANU, MUSTAPHA KEHINDE, LASIS ABEEB, ALEXANDRA IORLAHA, OJO TAIWO, AZEEZ MUJEEB, AKINYEMI DAVID, ADEOSUN ADEKUNLE, OLAOBAJU SAMUEL, ADURA ADEFEMI, PAUL BASIL, and KUNLE DAVID.
Twelve other simple offense convicts were pardoned outright:
OLABOMIJI NURUDEEN, MUSTAPHA ISAH, OLALEKAN ABDULLAHI, AYOMIDE OLOJEDE, AKEEM RAPHAEL, ADEYEMI ABIODUN, OLADIPUPO SEGUN, OMISAKIN SUNDAY, ADEMOLA ADIO, TUNDE OLAPADE, LATE CHIEF WOLE OLA, RUFUS OJO and OMOLOYE OLAJIDE OLAYEMI.
Four death row convicts – SUNDAY MORAKINYO, SEGUN OLOWOOKERE, TUNDE OLAPADE, and DEMOLA ODEYEMI – received outright pardons for good conduct. Six others – OLUWAFEMI FAGBEMI, BEWAJI SUNDAY, AMEHIN GEORGE, AYOMIDE ARULOGUN, TAIWO OLUWATOBI STEPHEN, and ABUBAKAR ABDULAZEEZ – were released on health grounds.
One convict had their death sentence commuted to 15 years imprisonment after serving a minimum of 10 years.
Governor Adeleke invoked the powers granted him by the Nigerian Constitution to issue the pardons and commutations in the spirit of the Christmas season. While the move is expected to bring relief to inmates and decongest prisons, the inclusion of Olowokere, initially reported to be convicted for armed robbery but later revealed to have stolen fowls, has raised some eyebrows. The governor’s office hasn’t commented further on specific cases.
