Federal judicial workers are on the verge of a crisis, with the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) issuing a warning strike over poor working conditions and the federal government’s failure to implement agreed welfare packages.
The worst-hit workers are at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), who are grappling with poor salaries, unfulfilled promises of wage increases, and delayed payment of benefits.
Two letters sighted in Benin City on Thursday addressed to the Chief Registrar, Federal High Court, Abuja, and JUSUN members at the Customary Court of Appeal highlighted key grievances. Workers are yet to receive the promised 25% and 35% salary increases, the N35,000 wage award, and in the case of NICN workers, the N70,000 minimum wage.
At the NICN in Benin City, workers described the situation as dire. One staff member, speaking anonymously, said:
“Last Christmas, many of us got peanuts as bonuses. The salary is very poor, and the minimum wage has not been implemented for us at NICN. The N35,000 wage award by the federal government is yet to be received. Other organizations under the federal government have been paid arrears from January to July, but nobody is addressing our case.”
The worker lamented the high cost of living, inadequate support from management, and the lack of regular training opportunities for NICN staff compared to their counterparts in the Federal High Court. “We recently went for promotion examinations, but our Daily Travel Allowance (DTA) has not been paid, and there is no communication about it,” the worker added.
The source further criticized JUSUN leadership at the federal level, accusing them of neglecting federal workers’ issues.
“The union seems inactive at the federal level. They are only active in the states, but the national leaders are not living up to expectations. They only collect our dues and leave our issues unattended.”
