“NBA President Commends Lawyers At Ethics Workshop” — Stresses Self-Regulation Under New Money Laundering Rules

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has commended legal practitioners for their commitment to professional ethics and continuous learning at the just-concluded NBA–RoLAC Sensitisation Event on the 2023 Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC).
The two-day event, which took place in Abuja from February 3rd to 4th, 2025, brought together legal professionals to discuss the significant changes introduced in the 2023 RPC, particularly in the area of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance.
In his closing remarks, Osigwe expressed his appreciation for the sacrifices made by participants to attend the event. He emphasized the importance of the 2023 RPC in shaping the legal profession and addressing emerging challenges.
“The 2023 RPC introduces critical changes that directly impact our practice, especially in the area of AML compliance. Last year’s risk assessment underscored the urgent need for ongoing training in this field. As legal practitioners, we have a duty to ensure compliance while safeguarding the independence of the Bar,” Osigwe stated.
The NBA President reiterated the association’s commitment to upholding financial regulations without compromising the fundamental right to self-regulation. He stressed that the legal profession thrives on independence, and practitioners must remain resolute in preserving this core principle.
“The NBA remains dedicated to maintaining professionalism and upholding the rule of law. Our ability to self-regulate and maintain integrity is crucial to the future of our profession. Together, we will continue to lead by example, strengthening professionalism and ensuring the highest ethical standards,” he added.
Osigwe encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained during the event in their daily practice. He also called on legal practitioners to uphold the highest ethical standards, emphasizing that the credibility and sustainability of the legal profession depend on their collective efforts.
