A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Kunle Edun, has called for a thorough investigation into allegations made by Binance executive, Mr. Tigran Gambaryan, concerning an alleged demand of $150 million in bribes by three Nigerian legislators.
Mr. Gambaryan, through his X account, claimed that certain members of the National Assembly attempted to solicit bribes from Binance to prevent his arrest and prosecution over alleged money laundering activities in Nigeria. He further alleged that meetings were held both in the United States and Nigeria to negotiate a settlement for the cryptocurrency firm’s legal troubles in the country.
Edun, who is the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Citizens’ Engagement Committee, emphasized that these allegations are grave and cannot be ignored. He stated that no sovereign nation would allow a foreigner to make such serious claims against its public officials without substantial evidence. If the accusations are unfounded, Edun noted, Gambaryan must be held accountable for attempting to tarnish Nigeria’s international reputation.
“I call upon the Federal Government to establish a probe panel to thoroughly investigate these allegations. The hearing should be conducted in public to ensure transparency and afford all parties the opportunity to be heard. If, after the investigation, the claims are found to be false, the Federal Government and the implicated legislators should take legal action to clear their names,” Edun stated.
Expressing concern over the official response from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Edun criticized the government’s swift dismissal of the allegations. “The statement issued by the Minister is premature and places the cart before the horse. These are serious allegations against top government officials, and Nigerians deserve to know the truth through a proper and independent inquiry.”
He further reiterated that the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption stance is at stake, and only a transparent and impartial probe will provide clarity on the matter. Nigerians, he asserted, are eager for an independent investigation and its outcome.
