Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has sharply criticized the recent renovation and renaming of the Abuja International Conference Centre by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during a public engagement, Obi condemned what he described as misplaced priorities by political leaders who invest in lavish infrastructure projects while Nigerians continue to suffer from a failing health system.
“I visited some primary healthcare centres where there’s no toilet, no water, no medicine—nothing,” Obi lamented. “All we are doing is channeling resources into renovating buildings, mansions, and structures that don’t need renovation, instead of saving lives.”
He accused those in leadership of pursuing comfort and personal prestige at the expense of the masses. “They make you local government chairman, governor, or president, and all you want to do is renovate a house just so you can be more comfortable while women are dying in rural communities,” he said.
Obi particularly referenced the recent reports indicating that Nigeria remains one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth. “According to the latest data, a woman dies every seven minutes during childbirth in Nigeria. Yet we are building and commissioning international conference centres and celebrating it like we’ve solved the real problems,” he said.
He added, “We have sophisticated buildings and mansions, but we lack basic human dignity in our healthcare system. That is what we must dismantle—this system of governance that prioritizes vanity over value.”
The former governor urged Nigerians to remain committed to the struggle for good governance and justice. “I thank you all for your resilience and commitment. If we work together, we will dismantle this structure of waste and insensitivity,” he concluded.
Obi’s comments comes after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, commissioned the newly renovated conference centre, renaming it after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The event sparked widespread debate, with critics questioning the rationale for such expenditure amidst growing economic hardship and failing public services.
