The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out smart police stations across Nigeria as part of a strategic effort to modernize the Nigeria Police Force and strengthen national security through advanced technology.
This initiative follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday in Abuja between Galaxy Backbone (GBB) and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF).
At the signing ceremony, Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director of GBB, described the partnership as a major milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey and a significant step toward tackling security challenges with innovative solutions.
He stated, “Our collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund will facilitate the establishment of smart police stations nationwide, powered by GBB’s fibre-optic network, eLTE, and cloud infrastructure.”
Professor Adeyanju explained that these smart police stations will feature enhanced connectivity, advanced surveillance systems, Electronic Case Management Systems (ECMS), artificial intelligence, and robust cybersecurity measures.
“Smart policing means better surveillance, faster access to data, improved reporting systems, and real-time coordination. Integrating secure digital platforms into policing will enhance efficiency, transparency, responsiveness, and build greater public trust in law enforcement,” he said.
He added that this collaboration exemplifies how government institutions can jointly address critical challenges in security and digital development through strategic partnerships and technological innovation.
Mohammed Sheidu, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, emphasized that the project aims to bring the police force up to 21st-century operational standards.
He noted, “This MoU is very symbolic as it represents our commitment to modernizing the police force. Collaborating strategically with Galaxy Backbone aligns perfectly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s digitalization agenda.”
Sheidu highlighted one of the major challenges facing the Nigeria Police Force: effective data collection and management. “This initiative will be historic, transforming Nigeria’s security sector by improving data-driven policing and overall security operations.”
