The Nigerian senate has passed for first reading a refreshed National Grazing Bill to establish a national agency to serve the business interests of Fulani herdsmen across the country. The bill, sponsored by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, is titled ‘National Grazing Reserves Agency Bill, 2016′. It was read the first time at the senate on Wednesday, June 21, 2016. The topic of establishing grazing reserves across the entire country has been the subject of heated debates and tagged an Islamization plot in Nigeria where Christians make up about 55% of the population and Muslims 40%. A similar bill, which would empower the national grazing agency to forcefully seize land from any part of the country and create a special reserve for cattle herders who are dominantly Fulani, had scaled second reading in the house of representatives. Following a public outcry, the house of representatives appeared to have gone quiet on the bill.
