Activities at the Delta State Civil Service Secretariat in Asaba were paralysed on Friday as workers staged a protest over the alleged assault and subsequent death of a director reportedly linked to the Commissioner for Basic Education, Kingsley Ashibogwu, and his aides.
The protest led to the shutdown of operations across the secretariat as civil servants withdrew their services, demanding justice and accountability over the incident.
Addressing journalists during the demonstration, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Delta State, Goodluck Ofobruku, condemned the alleged assault and called for a thorough investigation.
He urged authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Ofobruku also disclosed that organised labour would convene an emergency meeting of affiliate unions to determine the next line of action.
He added that workers would continue the suspension of official duties pending further directives from labour leaders.
Reacting to the development, Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, assured workers that the state government would conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the director’s death.
Aniagwu said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remained committed to ensuring justice and uncovering the facts of the incident, promising that no stone would be left unturned in the investigation.
The protest has heightened calls for transparency and accountability as workers await the outcome of the inquiry.
