World ranking of universities based on impact of publications as derived from Google Scholar citations shows the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN) as No 1 in Nigeria and 14 in Africa while the University of Ibadan (UI) is 2nd in Nigeria and 18th in Africa. South African universities – University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch University, University of Kwazulu Natal, and University of the …Witwatersrand took the first five positions for Africa and generally rated very highly globally.

Five US universities – Harvard University, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, University of California Berkeley, University of Chicago, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology took the first 5 spots globally and other US universities dominated the top 100 universities and throughout the ranking.

Google Scholar Citations introduced the institutional profiles for providing rankings of scientists who shared the same standardized name and email address of an institution. Based on the total number of individual profiles, which is probably close to one million, while the number of universities profiles is over 5000, it was possible for them “to build a global ranking that, although still incomplete, can be representative at least for the best universities.”
