Vice President Yemi Osinbajo chats with governors and minsters catching up on several state matters during Yusuf Sabiu’s (Tunde) wedding reception in Kaduna at the weekend.The Presidency in Nigeria seems to be in turmoil with President Muhammadu Buhari battling for his life and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo reportedly battling opposition from the northern elite who saw the victory of Mr. Buhari in 2015 as their time to run Nigeria again after a long southern rule.
There are many reports, and as it is common in politics, many people who give information to the press speak on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. But, the message coming from many quarters is clear: Things are not well in Aso Rock, the Nigerian seat of power in Abuja. Mr. Buhari is not well but Mr. Osinbajo cannot be trusted by many who fear his godfather, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. That seems to be the dilemma.
Whether Mr. Buhari decides to take time off or resigns altogether, these powerful men would have a say on who takes over from him.
The constitution is clear that the Vice President should lead the country should the President become incapacitated. But in politics, many things can happen, and persistent rumours about a possible coup d’etat cannot be ruled out.
