In the recent past, like the owerri conference few years ago, it
was severally posited by the NBA leadership that over 10,000
lawyers registered and attended the conference. Even at the
conference venue at owerri, lawyers were still being registered… as
a matter of fact it was touted to be the “largest gathering of
lawyers on earth” and that got me wondering. Owerri is a small city
to compare with lagos, yet owerri had the capacity to cater for
over 10,000 lawyers.
This time it is lagos, our dear center of excellence, and just
less than two weeks into registration we are being told that nearly
all seats have been “sold out”. Who actually bought up these seats?
How many conference attendees did NBA plan for in this year’s
conference and how many slots have been booked and paid for.
I stand to be corrected, but i know lagos state had in the past
hosted events that catered for 10,000 attendees. What went wrong
this time? I can bet my call to bar certificate on the proposition
that as of today, 8/7/2017, that the number of lawyers who have
registered and paid for the forthcoming conference is less than
5000.
We the persons who have so far been denied the opportunity to
register for this conference demand answers. The NBA leadership and
the tccp must first take responsibility for this fiasco and then
take cogent steps to ensure that every lawyer who desires to attend
this year’s conference is accomodated.
I believe very strongly that the genesis of this entire fiasco
is the so called “tablets” promised for each registered conferee.
Whether NBA has capacity to avail “tablet” to all registrable
conferee is a question for another time. The truth be told, most
Nigerian lawyers already have mobile/hand held device that is
capable of the same function as the so called tablet, hence we can
really move on without the tablet.
As the holy bible says, if one of your eyes would cause you to
sin, pluck it off for its better to enter the kingdom of God with
one eye that to have two eyes and be thrown into fire. So also, if
the so called tablet would make NBA to shut out lawyers at the
Lagos conference, its better to do away with the tablet and
accomodate all registrable conferees. The question however is
whether the leadership of the bar would be prepared to eat back its
word on this tablet as earlier promised.
As i write this piece with heavy heart, my phone and email has
over 30 payment tokens sent to me from the conference portal for
the purpose of paying the conference fee, but unfortunately I have
been roundly unsuccessful in this regard, not on grounds of lack of
funds, but on grounds of technical knock out by the NBA/tccp….
