We received with great sadness and heavy heart, the news of the
demise Chief Francis F. Egele, SAN, FCArb and Mohammed Bala Esq.,
alias Ex Boy.
Chief Francis F. Egele SAN, FCArb was the former Attorney
General and Commissioner for Justice, Bayelsa state. He became a
Senior Advocate of Nigeria in September, 2017. He left this mortal
home at the age of 55.
Chief Francis F. Egele SAN excelled as a footballer, legal
practitioner, public officer and community leader. He was a mentor
to many lawyers.His demise has left a vacuum.
Mohammed Bala Esq., alias Ex Boy was a young lawyer who desired
to excel in the profession. As the saying goes, ‘man proposes; God
disposes.’ God the almighty has, due to reasons known to Him alone,
returned him back to Him.
Before his demise, Mohammed Bala Esq had spent over 72 hours in
the theatre room fighting for his life. May Allah (SWT) use that to
forgive him his sins. Death is indeed inevitable. As the Qur’an
says: “Every soul shall taste death; and We test you [all] through
the bad and the good [things of life] by way of trial: and unto Us
you all must return”. -21:35
I condole with their families, friends, relatives and all the
members of the Nigerian Bar Association.
These deaths as well as previous ones, call for serious worry
about the state of health of legal practitioners in Nigeria. One
says this bearing in mind, many of these recent deaths among the
members of the legal profession were sudden. You can be with
someone today and hear about his demise the next day. This is,
indeed, a cause for concern.
We need to critically articulate a position on healthcare for
legal practitioners. We must therefore come up with a healthcare
plan that will enable lawyers check their health status, identify
individual lawyers that are at risk; advise them on lifestyle
modifications; and treat them where necessary. Our members need to
be medically secured. We need to do this as our members are our
strength.
We have to first save our lives before saving the lives,
protecting the rights and properties of our clients. Death puts an
end to a lawyer’s usefulness to his/her clients.
Health is wealth and we must be care about how lawyers fare.
Health is wealth. Let’s pray for a cessation of these sudden
untimely deaths.
May God help us.
