Lagos beauty pageant suit: Court orders status quo

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered parties to
maintain status quo in a lawsuit stemming from the Africa Beauty
Queen International Pageant scheduled for March 30, 2018 at
Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

Justice Hadiza Shagari made the order on Wednesday following an
application for an interlocutory injunction filed by the founder of
Beauty of Africa International Pageant, Mr. Daniel Opuene.

Opuene had, through his lawyer, Mr. Justin Ige, urged the court
to stop the organisers of Africa Beauty Queen International Pageant
from going ahead with the event, claiming that the name was similar
to his own.

Opuene urged the court to stop the organisers from “staging any
pageant on March 30, 2018, under the name of Africa Beauty Queens
International Peagent or any other similar name, likely to suggest
that the first and second defendant’s business, is similar with the
plaintiff’s.”

In a short ruling on Wednesday, Justice Shagari ordered the
parties to maintain “status quo” pending the determination of the
suit.

She adjourned till April 17 to hear the substantive suit.
