The Governing Council of Young Lawyers’ Forum (YLF) of the
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) received with consternation, the
arrest and detention of David Amaefuna Esq. and Pius Ufo Inyang
Esq. both of Rickey Tarfa & Co. by the Nigerian Policemen
attached to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Gutzape, Abuja,
while duly representing their client.
Unarguably, the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria and host of other subordinate Laws of the land empowers
Lawyers to represent and defend their client(s) within the ambit of
the law before any constituted authority irrespective of any
offence the client(s) is/are accused of.
Consequently, this despicable act of the SARS, Gutzape, Abuja,
was not only in defiance of the Rule of Law but also an attack on
the Legal Profession and Democratic Society of our dear Country
Nigeria.
Thus, The Young Lawyers’ Forum finds the arrest and detention of
the named Lawyers by the Men of SARS, Gutzape, Abuja, as
unconstitutional, unlawful and vehemently detestable in its
entirety.
The National Chairman of the Forum has assigned the Alternate
Chairman and other key Council Members to be in Mpape Magistrate
Court, Abuja (where the two Lawyers were subsequently arraigned) on
Monday the 30th day of April 2018 in solidarity with our colleagues
and enjoins all Young Lawyers domiciled in Abuja to attend the
Court session!
The Council has unanimously agreed to explore other lawful means
to ensure this injustice does not go unpunished.
