Ganduje vows to recognise emirs despite court ruling – TheNigerialawyer

The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said that the
state government would continue to recognise and emirs of Bichi,
Rano, Gaya and Karaye despite a court order dissolving their
creation.

A Kano High Court presided by Justice Usman Na’Abba had earlier
today dissolved the four additional emirates and sacked four first
class emirs created by Kano State Government.

On May 8, Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, assented to a
controversial law establishing four additional emirates with first
class emirs in Bichi, Rano, Karaye and Gaya.

Delivering the judgement on Thursday, the court said the Kano
State House of Assembly had violated the provision of Section 101
of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as
amended), thereby dissolving the emirates.

But a statement by the state commissioner for Information,
Mohammed Garba, said the state government would not concede to the
judgement in the “interest of the wellbeing of the people” of the
state.

“Kano State Government says it is studying the ruling of Kano
High Court on the creation of four new Emirates in the state with a
view to taking immediate appropriate action,” Mr Garba said.

The state government regretted that despite the constitutional
power and authority conferred on the State Assembly on “such
progressive and important issue”, the court rules otherwise.

“The Government will not fold its arms and concedes such
constitutional power in the interest of the wellbeing of the people
and general development of the state.

“Despite the ruling, the government still recognizes them as
First Class Emirs and will continue dealing with them as such.

“The state government therefore advised people to be calm, law
abiding and await further action,” he added
