A Minneapolis judge has denied Derek Chauvin’s request for a new
trial just hours ahead of his scheduled Friday sentencing in the
murder of George Floyd, reports said.

Defense attorneys for Chauvin, 45, had filed the motion in an
apparent attempt to stave off sentencing and also requested a
hearing over potential jury misconduct, which Judge Peter Cahill
also denied, CBS Minnesota reported.

Defense attorneys are expected to bring arguments to the appeals
court, but for now, Chauvin’s scheduled sentencing at 1:30 p.m.
local time will proceed as planned.
The former Minneapolis cop, who was convicted in April of
second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree
manslaughter in Floyd’s death, faces up to 40 years in prison.
“This is the most consequential case in modern Minnesota
history, really throughout the United States,” criminal defense
attorney Joe Tamburino, who is not involved with the case, told the
outlet.
“What we are about to see today is its conclusion.”
