Workers’ Day: Nigerian Worker Is An Example Of The Milked But Starved Cow — Sir, Dr. S.E.C Nwosu Charges Govt To Do Better 

*Calls On Both State And Fed. Govt To Settle All Outstanding Obligations To Workers
The Chairman Nigerian Bar Association  Ukwa Branch, Dr. Sir S. E.C Nwosu, has said that  this year’s workers’ Day celebration is coming amidst worsening economic and security situation in the country and the world at large.
Dr. Nwosu, who is also the Chairman  of the Forum, Abia State NBA Branches, made this remark on sunday, while Commemorating with Workers on the International Workers’ Day.
He lamented on the delay in payment  of salaries by government and the poor working conditions of employees.
He said; ‘I warmly felicitate with and congratulate Nigerian workers on the occasion of this year’s International Workers Day celebrations today.
‘The Nigerian worker is exposed to very challenging working conditions both in the workplace and at home. 
‘There is increasing insecurity of life and property both at home and at the workplace, there is workplace labour related violence particularly against the female workforce and above all, gross inadequate worker remuneration. 
‘It’s saddening that Nigerian workers have remained on the #30k minimum wage for many years now with many states still not able to pay the minimum wage which cannot take the worker home.
‘It is also unsettling that workers in many states of Nigeria particularly the teaching staff have not been promoted in some states in the past twelve years and counting.
‘In many states entitlements of the workers are either not paid at all or as at when due. And pensions and gratuities are forcefully written off or not paid as due.
‘The Nigerian worker is an example of the milked but starved cow.
 
“On this occasion of the International Workers Day, I call on the Federal and States Governments as well as all employers of labour in both public and private sectors as a matter of urgency to clear all backlogs of workers’ earned entitlements and to fulfil all promises made to the workers.
Workers at all sectors should be promoted as at when due.
“On their part, workers should use the occasion of this year’s workers day for retrospection and rededication to their duties. 
“There has been the prevalence of the belief that the Nigerian worker particularly in government service is not productive. A number of states’ governors have consistently refused to fulfil government obligations to the workers on the ground that the workers are not productive.
“While I call on the employers of labour in all sectors including the Federal and State Governments to use this year’s workers day to settle all outstanding obligations to the workers, the workers should rededicate themselves to their duties.
“Congratulations to all workers on the occasion of your day today.
