The Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) on Thursday reinstated four lawmakers who were suspended in July 2024 over allegations of plotting to impeach the Speaker, citing concerns over high-handedness in managing House affairs.
The decision followed the presentation of a report by the Chairman of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Mr. Kanayo Onyemaechi (APC – Owerri West), who recommended their recall after the lawmakers showed remorse and pledged good conduct moving forward.
The affected legislators include:
Mr. Dominic Ezerioha (APC – Oru West)
Mr. Samuel Otuibe (APC – Ahiazu Mbaise)
Mr. Chidiebere Ogbunikpa (APC – Okigwe)
Mr. Henry Agbasonu (APC – Ezinihitte Mbaise)
The suspended lawmakers were accused of attempting to impeach Speaker Chike Olemgbe, alleging high-handedness in the management of House affairs. Their suspension had fueled tensions within the Assembly, with political observers questioning the fairness of the disciplinary action.
However, Onyemaechi’s report stated that the lawmakers had expressed regret over their actions, prompting the committee’s recommendation for their reinstatement.
The report was adopted after a motion by Mr. Chisom Ojukwu (APC – Nkwere), seconded by Mr. Clinton Amadi (LP – Owerri Municipal). Several lawmakers spoke in favor of the recall, including:
Deputy Speaker, Amarachi Iwuanyawu
Mr. Kelechi Ofurum (APC – Owerri North)
Mr. Ikenna Ihezuo (APC – Orlu)
Following a majority vote in support of the committee’s recommendations, Speaker Chike Olemgbe officially announced the reinstatement of the suspended legislators.
