The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has issued a statement clarifying that it will not involve itself in political matters that could divide its members with varying political interests.
This decision follows mounting pressure on the forum to comment on the ongoing political situation in Rivers State, particularly regarding the recent declaration of a State of Emergency and suspension of elected officials, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement signed by the NGF Director-General, Abdulateef Shittu, the forum explained that as a body consisting of governors elected on different political platforms, it will focus on governance and general policy issues rather than partisan political conflicts. Shittu emphasized that taking positions on contentious issues could lead to division within the forum, especially given its history of overcoming political differences.
The statement reads: “As a technical and policy hub, the NGF steers clear of taking positions that may alienate members with varying political interests. Taking positions on contentious partisan issues would mean a poor sense of history—just a few years after the forum survived a fundamental division following political differences among its members.”
Shittu assured the public and media that while the NGF will refrain from engaging in political discourse, it remains committed to bold stances on matters of governance and public policy, including wages, taxes, education, and universal healthcare.
The NGF called for understanding from the public and media, noting that appropriate platforms would handle any political crises. The forum reiterated its focus on promoting unified policy positions and working towards sustainable socioeconomic growth for the country.
