African ice cream entrepreneur :
Tanzanian Mercy Kitomari in 2013 quit her banking Job to pursue her vision of making frozen desserts.
She is currently the founder and CEO of Nelwa’s Gelato, an ice cream business operating in the financial hub of Dar es Salaam.
She had an interest in ice cream while studying her MBA in the UK. She worked part time as a tour guide, and after every sightseeing trip she would take visitors to ice cream parlours at Leicester Square in the heart of London.
She said in aninterview… we drink a lot of tea and alcohol, but my mission was to influence the culture of frozen desserts.
After completing her studies in the uk she took at banking Job in Tanzania. She started making ice cream in 2002 from her mothers kitchen and latter on quit her job as a banker.
Today she operates an outlet in Dar es Salaam, sells to hotels and restaurants, and also makes home deliveries.
She has alo been partnering with other bakeries to help her expand her reach, since she does not currently have enough money to open other stores.
